ABOUT ME

Lise Hopland

I am an artist from Bergen, Norway. Like thousands of artists before me and beside me I've been doodling, sketching and drawing for as long as I can remember. Creating things has always just given me such joy (though not without frustrations!). Having a multitude of interests I ended up choosing to work in the medical sector as a Medical Secretary for General Practitioners as well as at the local University hospital as biology and psychology is something that has fascinated me since a young age.

I took my first art class at 16, it was an evening class where we were doing Chinese calligraphy. And it was amazing! I felt so invigorated and excited about it that I signed up for their next class, although sadly the last one. After that there were a few years were I was taking the odd creative classes such as jewelry making, quilting, bookbinding, sewing, woodworking and for some unknown reason: medieval log building.

In 2013 I signed up for a night school for art in Bergen, which fueled my dreams of one day becoming an «actual artist». I quit my job and applied for a 2 year full-time program at Kunstskolen i Bergen. Simultaneously I met Ânia Marcos and Frederic Daelemans through an online art community and we decided to start the adventure of writing and illustrating our own children's book, Tales of Three. The three of us working together online was a dream come true!

I've spent a lot of time thinking and pondering about what art means to me, why it keeps me balanced although it isn't without it's frustrations and challenges, but I have come to the conclusion that the reason why I create my art is because it is a way for me to discover, explore and search for what it means to be human. Our connections, our emotions and our experiences – and that way I get to bring my love for psychology and mental health together with art.

Right now though I am working at an art atelier in Bergen.
